Cleaning Showers – Cleaning Tips

January 26, 2010

If you really want to feel clean, you will want to make sure that your shower is clean first. With this in mind, here are some tips to help make cleaning this area of your home easier.

The Shower Walls

A good thing to use on your shower walls and glass door is liquid car wax because it will seal your wall’s pores, which will make it easier to clean and maintain. You will want to do this twice a year (every six months) and then use a general bathroom cleaning solution on a regular basis.

The Shower Floor

After you have cleaned your shower walls you will want to clean your shower floor. For tiled floors you will need to use a tile cleaner. You can make your own by combining one part chlorine bleach to five parts warm water. From there you can move on to use paste wax on your floor so that you can prevent the build-up of water spots. Once applied, you will want to dry your floor with a clean, soft rag.

Faucets

Now you will want to take some time to clean your faucets. You can use vinegar as a cheap, easy way to remove the water and dirt deposits around your faucets or drains. Simply soak a cloth in the vinegar and then wrap it around the faucet. After a while you can scrub it with an old toothbrush.

Shower Door Tracks

Your shower door tracks will get so dirty that they need special attention sometimes. To do this you will want to start by removing any dirt or hair from the tracks with a toothbrush, then use a long-nosed vacuum attachment to gather it up. You can then pour vinegar into the track and let it set for 15 minutes. Now use the toothbrush to scrub the track again before rinsing with warm water.

Shower Curtains

While you can wash your shower curtain in the washing machine, it will work even better if you add a cup of bleach and a cup of vinegar or a cup of baking soda to the laundry detergent. Now hang it back on your shower rod and allow it to dry.

Always Be Prepared

You should always have an all-purpose cleaner and a sponge available to do some simple cleaning. By doing a regular clean up you will be able to prevent a lot of major cleaning. It is also a good idea to hang an air freshener in your bathroom.

Preventing Mildew After Your Shower

Once you take a shower you should wipe or squeegee your shower walls to keep mold and mildew from having somewhere to grow. For this same reason it is also a good idea to slightly open your window and turn on your bathroom fan so that the air can circulate while you are showering. Also, make sure that you leave your bathroom light on for at least 20 minutes after you are done showering.

A Homemade Shower Cleaning Solution

Another great shower cleaning solution, part of your bathroom cleaning supplies, is one that you can actually make at home. All you need is a half-cup of ammonia and one gallon of water. Combine this in a spray bottle and then you will have it available to use to remove soap scum from your shower doors whenever you need to do so. Just make sure that you rinse it off really good with warm water whenever you do use it.
