When makeup gets on carpet, it can cause an unsightly stain if not properly treated. There is no “one size fits all” solution for make-up removal. The treatment will depend on the type of makeup. As with any stain remover, it is important to test in an inconspicuous spot before using on carpet. While most methods can be safely used without problems, there is the potential for discoloration
To begin stain removal, carefully remove any excess makeup. Be careful to not rub the stain as this can make it worse. Then dampen a white washcloth with the appropriate cleaning solution and blot stain. Once stain has been removed or no more color comes out, spray with clean water and blot with clean white cloth. Apply paper towels to the damp area, weigh down and allow to sit several hours. Remove paper towels, let carpet air dry the rest of the way, and vacuum.
For lipstick, isopropyl alcohol, paint remover, dry cleaner solvent or a solution of Ivory soap and water can be used. With nail polish, a non acetone nail polish remover can be used, provided it has no fragrance or color. Mascara or eyeliner can usually be removed by mixing ΒΌ teaspoon of Dawn or Joy dish soap with one cup of warm water.
A solution of five to six drops of mild laundry detergent and one cup of cold water is effective on oil-based powdered makeup. For liquid foundation, use a non-flammable dry-cleaning solution or a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.
If the carpet has natural fibers or dyes or is made of wool or silk, it is best to have the stain treated by a professional carpet specialist. These products generally require more delicate care and cleaning solutions for them may not be available to the general public.
