How to Clean a Shower Curtain

February 9, 2010

While you may think that your showers would stay clean since you shower daily. However, all of the soap, shampoo and other products that you use while showering will cause the curtains to begin looking dirty. The bathroom’s damp atmosphere also doesn’t help since it often leads to the buildup of mildew.

Take Your Shower Curtain Down

You will need to remove your shower curtain from its rod and take out its hooks.

Machine Wash Your Shower Curtain

If your shower curtain isn’t too dirty and it is machine washable, then run it through your washing machine on a gentle cycle with a couple of towels and some mild detergent. The towels will soak up the moisture during the spin cycle so that you don’t have to worry about getting water everywhere whenever you take it out of your washing machine. Nevertheless you will still need to hang your shower curtain back up and open it up fully so that it can dry. Whenever you undertake this process on a regular basis your shower curtain will stay nice and clean and you won’t have to worry about mildew.

A Stronger Cleaning Method

For those shower curtains that cannot be machine-washed or that need more than this, you will want to opt for a different method. Herein you will want to lay your shower curtain out on a soft surface. Mix up a solution of one quart of warm water and one cup of bleach. (Make sure that you don’t get this mixture on your clothing or anywhere else.) Now use mixture and a sponge to scrub the curtain. Once you have done this you will want to rinse the curtain thoroughly before washing the other side. If this doesn’t work and the mildew still doesn’t come out, then you will need to purchase a new shower curtain. The only other thing that you can do is try spraying it with some undiluted bleach but make sure that you wear rubber gloves and follow the directions on the bottle.

Utilizing Your Bathtub

Remember that you can use your bathtub to clean your shower curtain if you don’t have any other place to work. Simply fill your bathtub with hot water then add a small amount of detergent and bleach. Allow your shower curtain to soak for two hours then rinse it off thoroughly.

Cleaning On A Regular Basis

If nothing else will work, then you are going to need to purchase a new shower curtain. Make sure that it is machine washable though so that you can get into the habit of washing it on a regular basis this time.
